How Moving During an Alberta Winter Can Be Easier

posted September 18, 2026

Moving is rarely anyone’s idea of a relaxing experience. Add snow, icy sidewalks and freezing temperatures, and moving day can feel like an even bigger challenge.

But moving during an Alberta winter does not have to be stressful. With a little extra planning and the right preparation, you can make moving day safer, more comfortable and much more manageable.

Whether you are moving across Calgary, Edmonton or to a new community somewhere else in Alberta, these simple tips can help you stay organized and make the most of your winter move.

Check the Weather Before Moving Day

Alberta weather can change quickly, so one of the most important things you can do is keep an eye on the forecast in the days leading up to your move.

Check the weather, road conditions and any weather alerts before you leave. If a major snowstorm, freezing rain or extreme cold is expected, consider whether your moving schedule needs to change.

Alberta recommends avoiding unnecessary travel during severe winter storms and checking road conditions before heading out.

If you are working with professional movers, stay in touch with them and make sure everyone knows the plan.

Give Yourself More Time

Winter moving can take longer than moving during warmer months.

Snow and ice can slow down travel, while icy sidewalks and snowy parking lots can make carrying boxes and furniture more difficult. You may also need extra time to clear snow from vehicles, walkways or entrances.

Instead of planning your moving day down to the minute, build some extra time into your schedule.

A little flexibility can make the day feel much less rushed.

Dress for the Weather

It may be tempting to dress lightly because you will be moving around and working up a sweat, but it is still important to dress appropriately for the conditions.

Wear layers so you can adjust your clothing throughout the day. Warm socks, insulated footwear, gloves and a winter jacket can make a big difference, particularly when you are going back and forth between a heated home and the outdoors.

Alberta recommends wearing insulating layers, covering exposed skin, keeping footwear dry and taking regular warm up breaks when spending time outside in cold conditions.

And remember that your footwear matters. Choose boots with good traction to help reduce the risk of slipping on snow or ice.

Protect Your Floors

One of the biggest challenges of a winter move is keeping snow, slush, salt and dirt out of your new home.

Before moving day, place mats or towels inside entrances and create a designated area where wet footwear can be left.

If possible, use plastic floor coverings or cardboard in high traffic areas. This can help protect flooring while movers and friends carry boxes and furniture inside.

It is also a good idea to keep a few extra towels nearby. Alberta winters have a way of turning a small amount of snow into a surprising amount of water once it comes indoors.

Prepare Your New Home Before You Arrive

If you have access to your new home before moving day, take advantage of it.

Make sure the heat is working, lights are on and the space is ready for your arrival. If you are moving into an apartment building, confirm where you should park, which entrance to use and whether an elevator or loading area needs to be booked in advance.

Knowing these details ahead of time can prevent unnecessary delays when the moving truck arrives.

If you are moving into a rental community, it is also worth checking with your property management team about move in procedures, elevator bookings, parking restrictions and any building specific requirements.

Keep Your Essentials Easily Accessible

Do not pack everything into boxes that will be buried underneath furniture and other belongings.

Prepare a separate overnight or first day bag with the things you will need immediately, including:

• Warm clothing and extra socks
• Toiletries
• Medications
• Phone chargers
• Important documents
• Snacks and water
• Basic cleaning supplies
• Towels
• Coffee or tea
• Pet supplies, if applicable

You may also want to keep a small tool kit, scissors and a box cutter somewhere easy to reach.

Having these essentials ready means you can settle in without opening twenty boxes just to find your toothbrush.

Make Winter Travel Part of Your Moving Plan

If you are driving to your new home, make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter conditions.

Check your tires, battery, windshield wipers, lights and fluids before moving day. Keep your vehicle stocked with winter essentials such as warm clothing, blankets, an ice scraper, a flashlight and other emergency supplies.

Alberta recommends preparing vehicles for winter and keeping an emergency kit on hand.

If conditions become dangerous, do not feel pressured to stick to your original schedule. Your safety should always come first.

Be Careful on Snow and Ice

Carrying a heavy box while walking across an icy surface is not the time to discover that your boots have poor traction.

Take smaller steps, keep your hands free when possible and use cleared walkways. Avoid carrying items that block your view, particularly on stairs or slippery surfaces.

Alberta Health Services recommends taking your time, using handrails, keeping your hands out of your pockets and avoiding areas that appear icy.

If you are moving furniture, ask for help rather than trying to carry something heavy across a slippery surface by yourself.

Protect Your Belongings From the Cold

Some belongings should not be left sitting in a moving truck or cold vehicle for long periods.

Electronics, plants, certain household products and other temperature sensitive items can be affected by extreme cold. Keep particularly sensitive belongings with you whenever possible and avoid leaving them outside longer than necessary.

If you are unsure whether an item can safely be exposed to freezing temperatures, check the manufacturer's recommendations.

Set Up Your Bedroom First

After a long winter moving day, the last thing you want is to discover that your bed is still packed away.

Make setting up your bedroom one of your first priorities.

Put your bed together, unpack your bedding and set aside a change of comfortable clothes. Having one warm, comfortable space ready for the evening can make the entire move feel more manageable.

You do not need to unpack everything on the first day. Focus on creating a comfortable place to rest and tackle the rest gradually.

Make Your First Evening Comfortable

Once everything is inside, give yourself permission to take a break.

Order takeout, make a warm drink and enjoy your new space before worrying about every unopened box.

Moving is a major transition, and it is perfectly fine if your new home does not look completely finished on the first night.

The goal is to get settled, comfortable and ready to enjoy your new home.

Moving During an Alberta Winter Can Be Manageable

Winter may not be the easiest season to move, but good preparation can make a significant difference.

By checking the weather, allowing extra time, dressing appropriately, protecting your floors, preparing your new home and prioritizing safety, you can make your winter move much smoother.

At unitiiPM, we know that moving into a new home is about more than simply getting your belongings from one place to another. It is the beginning of a new chapter, and a little preparation can help make that first day feel a lot more comfortable.
