Accounting Manager

Calgary, AB

The Accounting Manager will play a key leadership role within our accounting department. This position is responsible for supervising and mentoring the accounting team while remaining actively involved in the day-to-day accounting functions of the business.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader who enjoys developing people, improving processes, and rolling up their sleeves to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of Property Accountants and Accounts Payable staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, training, and development of team members.
  • Establish and monitor departmental goals, deadlines, and workload distribution.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team environment.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training new accounting staff.

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Review financial statements, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules.
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of owner financial reporting.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Monitor accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management processes.
  • Support audit preparation and external reporting requirements.
  • Review trust account reconciliations and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and internal controls.
  • Assist with complex accounting transactions and problem-solving as required.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and improve accounting procedures and controls.
  • Work closely with operations teams to improve reporting and financial visibility.
  • Assist with Yardi system enhancements, reporting, and process optimization.
  • Develop efficiencies through automation and technology solutions.

Qualifications

Required

  • CPA designation (or working towards completion) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred / Added Advantage

  • Experience in property management, real estate, or multi-family housing accounting is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience using Yardi Voyager is highly desirable and will be considered a significant advantage.
  • Experience managing multiple entities, owner reporting, and month-end reporting cycles within a property management environment is an asset.
